Weight Loss Progress Photos

It seems kind of silly now, but we didn’t really want to post our ‘before’ photos on the blog.

Going in, I wasn’t sure how well we’d be able to stick to our diet. I didn’t want to be one of those people who have a blog full of photos where you could barely tell they lost any weight followed by series of posts on how they ‘cheated during Christmas’ or that their ‘co-workers brought everyone brownies today.’

Well now we are going on six months following a paleo/primal diet and I think we’re at a point where you can actually tell that our diet gets results. For the first month, we consumed our remaining non-paleo food as we eased into the lifestyle — so we’ve only been strictly paleo for about 5 months. In that time… I went from:

We’ve tried all the other diets before. We tried weight watchers. We tried Atkins. And so far this is the only thing we’ve been able to stick to. And, as you can see, it works.

  • CONGRATULATIONS! And what you haven’t said in this post but I’m sure you’ve experienced are the perks of better skin, hair, energy, etc.

    That’s really awesome.

    • Thanks Whitney!

I’m definitely more energetic and feel a lot better. No more back problems which were a constant problem for me when I was heavier.

Amanda’s skin has cleared up a lot and her hair and nails are much thicker and healthier as well. No downsides so far.

  • Mary:

    Very impressive!

I went from 178 – 135 in 5 months after switching to a mostly Paleo diet. I love that I never once counted calories and was always full and happy.

    Love your blog!

    • That’s awesome, Mary. I love to read about other people having success with paleo. I always hear negativity from people I personally know. “What? You can’t have pizza?!”

It’s refreshing to hear from someone that it’s worked for.

      • Mary:

Hah yes, people do love to gasp when they find out all the “restrictions”.

Your baseball cap first caught my attention when I was browsing Paleo blogs, Go Hogs! We lived in NW AR for 28 years, moved away a few years ago and miss it terribly. Your accent comes through a bit in your posts and makes me homesick. lol

  • “I didn’t want to be one of those people who have a blog full of photos where you could barely tell they lost any weight followed by series of posts on how they ‘cheated during Christmas’ or that their ‘co-workers brought everyone brownies today.’

Mission accomplished! You look like a different couple! Amanda, you look a bit like Miley Cyrus in your after pic!

  • Holy Cow….you guys look fantastic! So glad I stumbled here :)

  • Wow! Congrats you guys! You look fantastic.

  • You guys look amazing, this is so inspiring!!

    • Thanks Mrs. Buck. :)

I hope it inspires a lot of people. I’d like to say it was hard work, but it really wasn’t. We probably could have lost most of our weight through diet changes alone. We walked and exercised, and still do, mostly for cardiovascular health.

  • Wow! Wow! Look at you two! I had to show my husband. AMAZING changes. You two are an inspiration. :D

  • HOLY MOLY! Good for you guys. Hopefully you stick with it forever. Btw, would love to see more posts on hunting and wild game as it pertains to paleo.

    • Thanks Chuck. We intend to stick to it — it’s done wonders for every aspect of our lives.

And I’ve got plenty of hunting/game recipes in mind for future posts. :)

  • Whenever I look at before and after pics I think: did you know that’s what you looked like? You both look like different people!

    Amazing work!

I’m easing into Paleo now, too and I can’t wait to add my own before and after photos.

    • It’s funny, Leanne. But I don’t really remember Amanda being that big and she said the same about me. I guess since we saw each other every day slowly slimming down it wasn’t so noticeable — because to all of our family who we haven’t seen in a while they’re really taken back by how different we look.

Good luck with the lifestyle. Need any advice we’ll try to help if we can. :)

  • i am curious what the reactions are to how lost you weight?

    • Hi Chuck,

Since we’ve been on paleo we seem to come across two different types of people:

The first group are people who learn how we did it — through paleo — and they dismiss it outright. “No bread? Oh I could NEVER do that!” We used to try to convert them. Not so much anymore. They are so addicted to their convenience that I don’t think anything would change their mind.

The second group are people who learn about it, and want to us to tell them about it, but never actually get started. They want all the websites we go to. They want all the books we read. But they never actually -do- anything about it. I think they like the idea of paleo, and probably feel a bit guilty with the food choices they make, but are intimidated to actually make such a drastic change.

I can only think of one person that we know personally who has started following the diet.

      • your results are incredible. hard to believe more of your acquaintances haven’t attempted to reproduce your diet and results. unfortunately, people don’t take the time to learn the science behind paleo. they probably think both of you will have heart attacks any day now.

  • Wow those results are pretty amazing, it’s always fun to see how drastically the paleo diet can work in such a short time frame.

I wonder, did you ever do any sort of calorie counting?

    • Hi Kris,

Thanks for question. At the beginning of our diet we did do some calorie counting. We used an iPhone app to keep track of our meals and activities. We’d eat a lot of natural food and frequently we would go for a walk in the evenings — between 3/4 and 1 1/2 miles. At the end of the day we’d usually come in at less than 800 net calories a day. We would never be hungry, it was just really hard to pack on calories eating natural foods.

After a few weeks of that, it seemed like kind of a waste of time because we never even really came close to exceeding our basal metabolic rate so we pretty much stopped keeping track and the weight kept falling off.

  • Erin:

Amazing! You guys looks so healthy…vibrant and happy…bright and shiny! Definitely poster people for the lifestyle.

  • Heather H:

You both look awesome! I am new to your blog and love seeing your food logs and recipes – thanks!

  • Michelle:

Wow! Congratulations to both of you! I just heard about the Paleo way of eating a few weeks ago and after researching it, I started 100% Paleo nearly two weeks ago. I’ve been looking for REAL people and REAL results on this diet and you both have accomplished what I’ve been looking for. I use the term “diet” loosely because I don’t feel like I’m on a diet at all. I’ve lost 12 lbs so far and I feel fantastic! Thanks for posting your story! BTW – I love your pics of Arkansas – so jealous of that beautiful scenery! :)

  • Olly:

Well done guys! Absolutely amazing transformation! Sure you didn’t use body doubles or photoshop? (Just kidding! Inspiring stuff) :)

  • Bob:

    Most AWESOME!!!

I did teh Atkins and it worked for me while I was on it. I’m still “trying” to get into the Paleo Swing of things. Bieng a Single male and I don’t cook it has been a challenge!

    • Hi Bob,

I did Atkins for a while, too, when I was younger. I lost a fair bit of weight, but it was just a diet to me so I gained it all back once I thought I could eat bread again. Paleo is the only thing we’ve done where we could keep the weight off long term.

  • I just started the Paleo diet two weeks ago. You two are inspirations!

  • Holly:

I was looking for information on foot injuries, and google happened to pull up your page. I got very interested in seeing how you two did this together. My sister does cross fit, and paleo, and is always talking to me about it. I sent her your site, as well. The recipes look great. You two really are an inspiration. Thank you so much for sharing your story!

  • Lois:

Wow! What great results! I was looking for Paleo Tilapia recipes and this page came up in the results. Its so great to see your transformations. I have eased into a paleo diet and can’t wait to see results and feel so much better.
