Training Injury

bones in the foot

This may come as a shock to a few of you (I know it did for me!), but there are a lot of bones in the human foot… And it doesn’t take much to break them.

On the return trip from Thanksgiving I suffered an injury which led to the fracture of a few of my toes on my right foot — arguably my favorite foot. I think that anyone who hasn’t had broken toes would be surprised how frequently you use your toes and how painful they can be once they are broken.

Here’s a couple of photos of the damage, and my foot has been swelling and changing color every day to where a full 1/2 of my foot is some shade of bruised.

Warning, almost graphic: Top, Bottom

It puts a bit of a damper on training since, for most exercises, you must be able to stand to perform. I haven’t quite figured out how I’m going to handle that one.

gonna make hunting tough. how did you do it?

  • I think the reason behind that there are so many bones in our feet is because they are always being used, they carry our weight all throughout as we live our lives. I agree with you, that when a foot is injured, it can absolutely ruin our days.

  • Your favorite foot? LOL. How much do you have to stay off your foot? I suppose you could do a lot of presses. If you didn’t have to stay off ot it entirely, you can do a lot (wearing just a boot). Heavy back squats and box squats, strict and push presses, biking intervals… Good luck!

    • I’ve had it wrapped and was told to keep it wrapped and it would heal over 4-6 weeks. I’ve been trying to keep pressure of it as much as I could. The bruising has mostly went away already except for the top of my foot. Thank you for the exercise ideas. :)

  • That really does put a damper not just in your training but for the holidays as well. :( I’m sure you can still do some upper body exercises as long as you don’t over-exert yourself. I hope you feel better soon. :)

    • That’s been the plan so far! I’ve been trying to keep as much weight off it just so the bones don’t shift and heal weird. I’d hate to have it rebroken because it set wrong.
