Incredible, Edible Egg

Chicken Eggs

Chicken Eggs are Delicious

Depsite the 550 million eggs that have been recalled recently; I’m still eating them. My eggs are sourced from my grandfather, who raises them free range and are antibiotic and hormone free. These chickens live on a diet of bugs, grass, and little else. They’re as close to natural an egg as you can get and they taste delicious.

These chickens are rapid egg-layers and with adequate space, raising chickens for meat and eggs seems like it could be an economical, healthy solution to getting more protein and healthy fats into your primal diet. You know exactly what goes in and exactly what’s going to come out; you can’t say that about supermarket product.

Today I’m boiling down about a dozen eggs to use for salads and quick, healthy snacks. It’s much easier to consume a decent number of eggs if I know I don’t have to get out the frying pan and make a big mess to prepare them.

Bacon, Chicken, Avocado Salad

I graciously have Mark Sisson to thank for posting the recipe for Chicken, Bacon, Avocado Salad. I made this tonight for our dinner and it was absolutely delicious.

I did without the red onion (the wife can’t stand onions) and substituted the walnuts for pecans from my tree out back – but I’m sure the recipe is perfect either way.

In the end it added up to about 360 calories, and half of that was from the avocado which is just fine. We’re still in a pretty intense weight-loss phase so I’ve been keeping meticulous track of calories and exercises to make sure we’re going to keep losing weight as we figure out this whole paleo thing.

Planks Planks Planks

Everything I read these days seems to be talking about planks. When I was younger it was push-ups. And then it was crunches. Now planks are in.

Well tonight I decided to see what all the fuss was about. My mindset going in was… It’s like a push-up, but without the ‘push’, so it should be a LOT easier. Just my style.

I was wrong. Totally different set of muscles here, folks. I believe I was even working muscles that I’m not entirely sure I have.

I did 3 planks of 30 seconds each. By the end of the last plank I thought I might die. Or have a stroke.

Thankfully I’m still alive. And I have made a vow to myself to keep planking. Hopefully I will be able to hold it for 45 seconds or maybe even a full minute soon.

Dinner: Turkey Chops, Spinach, and Sweet Potato Fries

Turkey Chops, Spinach, Sweet Potato Fries

Delicious Dinner

Tonight our dinner consisted of a slice of a lean, seasoned turkey, about a cup of steamed spinach, and some seasoned sweet potato fries. And I must say it was delicious. All said, the dinner was under 200 calories. And I’m stuffed.

What? Feeling stuffed for under 200 calories? How is this possible?

Coming from a background of eating a giant plate of spaghetti (with garlic bread, of course!) for dinner and something like a large Big Mac combo for lunch, it seems almost ridiculous to eat and feel this good while consuming so few calories. Not that I’m complaining; I just wish I would have figured this out earlier.

I finished off the night with a short (56 minute) walk after dinner and I’m feeling great about tomorrow.

Taking out the Trash

Bread

Just say 'No'

Prior to our change to a paleo lifestyle, my family was very into grains. We had stopped eating white bread years ago, but frequently enjoyed whole wheat sandwiches, toast, pasta; you name it.

Because of this, we have an excess amount of grains that I would feel bad just throwing out. My perspective on this is that it was good enough for me for 25 years, it will be good enough for me for a couple more weeks in moderation.

One of the things I have an excess of is whole wheat bread and peanut butter. Not wanting to waste any food, and not wanting to ingest tons of legumes and grains all at once, I have relegated these items to mid-workout snacks. I ended up using almost two loaves of bread, an entire jar of peanut butter, and made about a dozen sandwiches. I cut them in half, froze them individually in zip-loc bags, and will now eat them half at a time during intense workouts when I need a little extra ‘boost.’ I can’t think of a better use for them.

Once these are used up, there will be no more bread or legumes in our house. The pasta and dairy are yet another story…

Walking 2.0

In an effort to mix up our routine a little bit, we hit a brand new walking trail to us this afternoon.

Compared to the flat trail at the park we normally walk, this new trail seems like a substantial progression in difficulty. I know I must be getting some smirks for that one. After all, how difficult is walking, right? Well it’s pretty difficult for us at this point.

Both trails are similar in distance, but the new trail has many incline changes and the burning sensation in my calves the whole time lets me know that this trail is actually putting my body to work.

I’m excited to go back and thankful that we now have the choice between a long, easy walk or a more intense workout as we work our way into getting fit.

Primal Fitness

I’m really trying to ease us into this paleo philosophy. I’m being embarassingly honest when I say that I haven’t walked to exercise in over a decade. Despite that, at my last checkup my doctor gave me a relatively clean bill of health and encouraged that I spend at least 30 minutes a day walking. And that seemed like a good place to start. Cavemen walked all the time, right?

We started on Tuesday walking around the lake on the walking trails at a park here in town.

The first night we managed just under a mile. It was hot; we were out of shape; I wore the wrong kind of shoes; it was boring and even slightly annoying.

Despite not having a whole lot of fun, we continued walking and on Wednesday and Thursday we upped our distance to 1.5 miles. I wore running shoes that actually fit my feet and had a much better time. It was amazing the huge difference something as simple as shoes makes when exercising. If you aren’t comfortable, you aren’t going to want to do it.

By the weekend we were pushing 3 miles, and it even seemed easier than the shorter distance when we started. We actually look forward to going for walks now. Toward the end of the walk it turns into a:

Me: “Do you want to stop or do you want to keep going?”
Amanda: “We can keep going. Let’s walk over there.”

And that’s a good feeling.

I’m still waiting to see the results of all the walking, but I can already tell you that I sleep more soundly if nothing else than from being able to relax outdoors away from the office and work.

Childhood Obesity Awareness Month

September 2010 is Childhood Obesity Awareness Month.

I wish this would have been addressed when I was one of those kids and my mom had to shop for clothes for me in the ‘husky’ catalogs she received in the mail.

The only problem is this seems like it’s more of a P.R. stunt than actually trying to tackle the problem.

Clearly the ‘food pyramid’ isn’t working; clearly there is something wrong with our diets.  I don’t believe setting aside a month to talk about childhood obesity is going to stop fast food chains from targetting their greasy, artery clogging food at children the other 11 months of the year.  Actually, I doubt they stop doing that during Childhood Obesity Awareness Month, either. So make that 12 months of the year.

It’s really a sad state of affairs.

And here’s the Tale of the Tape

Good record-keeping is vital. I’m going to be keeping track of fitness data for both my wife and I. Obviously there are some physiological differences between us, but we will be eating mostly the same foods (to make preparation easier) as well as doing most of the same fitness routines.

I think that it will be interesting to see how the same primal nutrition plan affects our bodies differently.

Welcome

Welcome to Primal Fed. My name is Richard and I started this blog as a way to document/learn about natural health using a paleolithic diet plan and exercise routines. After many, many, failed attempts at counting calories, points, and carbs, I’m trying something new. Something natural. Something that has been working for millions of other people for millions of years.

I’m just starting out with my paleo diet and I will likely be ‘cheating’ as I work my way into it. And I think that’s fine.

I don’t think that it’s in the best interest of my health or money to go throw all the food I have already bought away to make a lifestyle change. I’m not going to make a sudden and drastic change from eating breads and pastas for 25 years to eating nothing but meat and vegetables. I have an excess of non-paleolithic foods in my pantry and I’m going to use them. I will slowly work them in (or out of?) my diet, but I will use them nonetheless. And I think that’s what a lot of you will do, too.

I hope to make this a healthy, happy journey for all of us.
